QUITTR alternatives, compared honestly

Which alternative is right depends on the part of QUITTR you want to replace: the counter (two apps do that free), the lessons (Fortify), the people (Relay), or the filtering (BlockerX). And if what you want is for none of this to sit on somebody's server, that rules out most of the category. What QUITTR actually is

QUITTR launched in August 2024 and is the biggest consumer app in this category: 4.7 stars and roughly 33,000 US ratings, with a Play version released in March 2025. Inside, it is a streak counter with milestone badges, a plant that grows as the count goes up, a thirty-day ring of daily tasks, Screen Time blocking, a forum with challenges and referral codes, a message-capped AI chat called Melius, and a panic screen that shows your own face through the front camera over blunt copy.

The sign-up is a ten-to-twelve page quiz that ends in a "dependency score". QUITTR's one-time offer then arrives with an eighty-per-cent discount and a five-minute countdown, and the last gate in the QUITTR funnel is a three-day trial. Verified pricing in August 2026: $9.99–14.99 a month, $19.99–29.99 a year, and a $49.99 lifetime purchase.

The marketing runs ahead of the evidence: "750,000 successful recoveries" and a 62% figure for people who quit, with no method published for either, plus brain-rewiring language and brain-scan imagery the underlying research does not support. Our six-question screen is the opposite approach — a published instrument, scored exactly as its authors scored it, with no number invented anywhere.

Why people go looking for an alternative

Three documented patterns, all of them in public reporting or store reviews rather than rumour.

The funnel. The quiz-to-score-to-offer sequence is the category's most-copied growth engine and its most complained-about screen. Reviewers of QUITTR describe trial days extended without a clear end date and charges arriving afterwards, and third-party guides now tell new QUITTR users to ignore the timer and read the plans properly.

Money that does not stick. A large complaint cluster on QUITTR's US store page sits on the lifetime purchase: people describe paying, losing access after an update or a reinstall, being charged a second time, and waiting weeks on refund emails. That is the signature of an entitlement keyed to a server account rather than to the store receipt — which is also why "restore" often does nothing.

Data. In March 2026 a misconfigured Firebase backend let anyone into the records of more than 600,000 QUITTR users: ages, self-reported frequency, written notes about how viewing pornography made them feel, community posts. More than 100,000 of those accounts belonged to minors, and a researcher had reported the hole months before it was closed. That is what happens when this kind of material lives on a server at all.

If you want the lessons

Fortify is the closest thing to a clinical curriculum: daily emotional check-ins, video lessons, correlation charts, allies, forums, optional paid human coaching. Fortify sells no trial at all and runs a free tier that users say has been cut back, with lessons that used to be free now behind the paywall. It ships no blocker. Verified pricing: $12 a month, $89.99 a year, $199.99 one-off.

Fortify is also the one app whose own material handles a slip properly — a lapse is not a relapse, and you are not back at square one. In a category that mostly sends the counter to zero, that is worth more than a feature list.

If you want people instead of a streak

Relay puts you in a small anonymous group matched by age, gender and whether you want faith or science framing, and runs a therapist-designed sixteen-week programme. There is no public streak; status lives in three zones instead. $11.99 a month or around $150 a year, with live meetings priced separately, from about $42 for a six-week pass up to $399 a year.

Relay's own line about filtering is the most honest sentence any of these vendors has published: blockers can slow you down, but they cannot teach you what to do with an urge when it arrives.

If you want a gentler daily practice

Brainbuddy has run since roughly 2013: a hundred-day curriculum, breathing and meditation, a growing tree, a blocker, the softest visual identity in the category. $12.99 a month, $37.99 a quarter, $99.99 a year, plus one-off courses. Brainbuddy has historically run a seven-day trial. Its reviewers ask repeatedly for a course on what to do after a slip, which it does not really have.

Seed is the gamified option: an evolving 3D orb, levels, audio tracks, a blocker. One frequently cited review describes expecting the seed to grow into a tree day by day, and finding that it does not work like that.

If what you want is filtering

BlockerX is the blocker-first app: VPN-based filtering, an Android accessibility scanner, alerts to a partner if the app is removed. Pricing is inconsistent across sources — roughly $90–139.99 a year, $129–149.99 one-off, with monthly tiers reported as high as $49.99 — which usually means constant price testing. Reviewers report the filtering VPN dropping silently, alerts that fire when nothing was disconnected, and an AI buddy that tells them it is asleep.

What to check before you pay for anything in this category

• Does the purchase restore without an account? If the entitlement lives on the vendor's server, a lost account is a lost purchase.
• What leaves your device? Quizzes, notes and forum posts are the material that ended up exposed in March 2026.
• Can you turn the notifications off?
• Does the price on the marketing page match the price in the store?
• What does the app do when you slip? If the answer is "sends you to zero", you find that out on a bad night rather than a good one.
