Privacy Policy

1. Your record never leaves your phone

Everything you enter in the App — your start date and the line you wrote, every slip, check-in, urge and weekly reflection, your milestones, your reminder times and your settings — is written to a private database on your device and stays there. There is no account, no login, no sync, no cloud and no server of ours for it to travel to. We cannot read it, we cannot restore it, and we cannot hand it to anyone who asks, because we never receive it.

That is the whole design, not a setting. The App has no partner or accountability feature, sends no reports to anyone else, and has no social layer of any kind. Nobody is watching your day count but you.

2. No content processing, no AI

Unhooked contains no chatbot and no large language model. Nothing you write is sent anywhere to be analysed, scored or summarised. The hard moments are handled by scripted, on-device tools — paced breathing, the dive reflex, urge surfing — and by links to real crisis resources.

3. What the App sends

3.1 Anonymous event counts and crash reports

So we can find crashes and see which parts of the App get used, the App sends anonymous crash reports to Firebase Crashlytics and anonymous counts of a fixed list of events to Firebase Analytics. This is always on and there is no setting that turns it off.

The complete event list. Firebase Analytics carries these seven events and nothing else. Four record recovery; three record how the App itself was used:

Text you wrote cannot reach an event. Every event goes through one function in the App, and that function accepts only numbers, yes/no flags, and fixed names written into the source code. A property that is anything else is dropped before the event is sent. So the answer to “could a note leak through analytics?” is no, by construction rather than by promise.

What never goes out. Your notes, your triggers, your reasons, your moods, your weekly reflections, your start date, your day count, your streak, your milestones, your reminder times, your dates and your totals. Not one number or word of your record is in any event above.

Crash reports carry the technical detail of a crash — the stack trace, device model, operating-system version and App version — and none of your content.

Firebase gives your install an anonymous, app-specific ID. It is not your name, email or advertising identifier, and we never link it to one. The App carries no ads, no advertising SDK and no tracking across other apps or websites. Firebase processes this data for us as our processor; see Firebase’s privacy documentation.

3.2 Purchases

If you buy Unhooked Pro, the payment is handled entirely by the Apple App Store or Google Play. We use RevenueCat to check whether a purchase is active, keyed to an anonymous identifier generated on your device — there is no account to log in to, and we never ask for one. We never receive your name, email address or card details. Restoring a purchase on a new phone works from your store account, not from anything we hold.

3.3 No personal information

The App asks for no registration, no name, no email address, no phone number and no date of birth. It requests no contacts, no photos, no location and no health data. The only system permission it ever asks for is permission to show reminders, and you can say no and keep every other part of the App.

4. Reminders

Reminders are scheduled and delivered by your device. There is no push service, no server sending you anything, and no record anywhere of whether you opened one — beyond the anonymous count named in section 3.1.

No reminder Unhooked sends ever contains the words porn, masturbation, NSFW or relapse. A notification lands on a screen other people can see, so it says as little as it can and still be useful.

5. Export — your copy, in plain text

The App can write your whole record to a single JSON file: your start date and the line you wrote, every slip, check-in, urge and weekly reflection you have logged, the milestones you have reached, and your settings. You choose where it is saved through your phone’s own save dialog. It never passes through us.

That file is unencrypted plain text. Anyone who opens it can read all of it, so keep it where you would keep a diary. The App says the same thing on the screen where you make one.

Restoring replaces what is on the phone rather than merging into it, so export first if the phone holds anything you want to keep. A file from another app, or one written by a newer version of Unhooked, is refused whole rather than partly read.

Export is also the only backup that exists. If you delete the App, lose the phone or wipe it, the data is gone for good — there is no copy on our side to restore, which is the price of there being no copy on our side at all.

6. Erase means erase

Erase all data, in the App’s own settings, removes every table and every preference Unhooked keeps on the device and cancels every reminder it has scheduled. It happens immediately, on the phone, with no request to us and no waiting.

There is nothing left for us to delete afterwards, because there was never a copy anywhere else. The anonymous event counts already sent cannot be tied to you, so there is nothing there to point at either.

7. What the Website collects

The Website, https://unhookedyou.com, uses Google Analytics to count visits in aggregate — page views, general location and device category — so we can see which pages are useful. This applies to the Website only. It is entirely separate from the App, has no access to anything on your phone, and cannot be joined to App data because there is no shared identifier and no App data on our side to join it to.

8. Data sharing

We do not sell, rent or trade your information. The only data that ever leaves your device is the limited, non-content data described above, shared with the providers named here — Firebase, RevenueCat, and, for the Website only, Google Analytics — for the purposes described and nothing else. Each is bound by its own privacy policy.

9. Storage, security and your rights

Your data lives in a private, sandboxed database on your device, under your operating system’s own file protection, and is covered by whatever device backup you have switched on. We hold none of it.

Because of that, you already exercise every data-protection right yourself, without asking us: you hold the data, you can read it in the App, export a full copy at any time, and erase all of it in seconds. Under the GDPR (EU/EEA and UK) you have rights of access, rectification, erasure, restriction, portability and objection; under the CCPA/CPRA (California) you have rights to know, delete, correct and opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information. We meet all of them by design: we never sell or share personal data, and the only data we ever receive — the anonymous counts in section 3.1 — identifies nobody. If you believe we hold data about you, write to us and we will confirm and act on it. You may also complain to your local data-protection authority.

10. Age

Unhooked is rated 17+ and is intended for adults. It is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. If you believe a minor has used the App and that we hold data about them, contact us — although, as set out above, the App sends us nothing that identifies any user.

11. Not medical or crisis care

Unhooked supports a personal recovery effort. It is not therapy, not crisis care and not a medical device, and it does not diagnose anything. If you are in danger or in crisis, contact your local emergency services or a crisis line.

12. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy. Changes are shown by the revision date above, and a change to what the App sends is made here in the same release that changes the App. Continued use after a change means you accept the updated policy.
